Introduction: Planetary Gear Wine Stand

A wine stand in form of working, revolving planetary gear. A nice addition to your geeky room/kitchen.

I choose wood as it goes well with wine and fits my interior well. I guess that transparent acrylic glass would look great in modern decor.

The design is metric and uses 6 and 10mm thick parts. Assembly is easy once you have the lasercut parts ready. It took me ca. 2 hours of fun to put it together.

You can make one yourself or if you feel it is worth $99 you can get one by backing our Kickstarter campaign here

Parts needed:

6mm plywood (280mm x 670mm) - lasercut according to drawings

10mm plywood (1300mm x 540mm) - lasercut according to drawings

Aluminium or carbon (better) tube 10mm OD, 8mm ID, cut in 3x 40mm, 1x 60mm - get one in RC model shops

10x 51100 thrust bearing - any bearing shop will have them

M3 bolts - 24x 12mm, 6x 15mm, 75x 20mm, 9x 25mm, 12x 30mm, 8x 35mm, 18x 50mm

M3 nuts - 44x hex nut, 108x square nut

M8 bolts - 3x 50mm, 1x 90mm

M8 nuts - 2x hex nut,

3x self-locking (nylock) M8 hex nut

3x M8 washers 2mm thick

Step 1: Laser Cutting

Cut all the wooden parts using laser. DXF files are ready to use, they are compatible with any cutting software.

Step 2: Frame

Collect the parts of the frame and mount them together as shown on the pictures. Do not confuse order of vertical pieces.
For the base use 30mm M3 screws and for the rest 12mm M3 screws.

Step 3: Planet Gears

For reference: the three big gears holding wines are called "planets" and central gear is called "sun". Planets spin around sun. Pluto - sorry, you are not a planet anymore, you are not included here ;-)

Important! Make sure that front and rear gears are in line with each other. There are 5 ways to connect them wrong and only one to make it right. To make it right put front and rear gear and place one on top of the other so that teeth and 3mm holes are aligned. On every gear there is one hole that has a small marking, while assembling just place those marked holes in the same position.

First attach the smaller ring to the rear gear, then add the front gear.

To join gears together use 20mm M3 screws. For the smaller ring use 50mm M3 screws.

All 3 planets are identical so repeat this step 3 times.

Step 4: Sun - Shaft

Collect all the parts for the sun/shaft.

Start with the longer part. Join three beams together (25mm M3 screws) but remember to put a nut in place in the middle beam.
Then join shaft with circular parts (15mm M3 screws).

While mounting the gears (35mm M3 screws) remember that both gears need to be in line. The front gears (slightly bigger, without central hole) go in between long and short beams. Now add shorter beam just like you did with the longer one.

While mounting the rear gear place a 90mm M8 bolt like on the picture. Finish by mounting the knob to the short beam using 20mm M3 screws.

Step 5: Carrier

It begins to look awesome!

Mount one planet to the triangle boomerang part. First place two thrust bearings on a 40mm tube on both sides of a boomerang. Note, that each bearing has two plates - one with bigger and other with smaller hole. Make sure that plate with smaller hole is positioned further from the boomerang. This applies to bearings on both sides of boomerang. Add a washer between the planet and a boomerang. Put a 50mm M8 bolt through the planet gear and the tube and fix it with a self-locking nut on the other end. Use moderate force and make sure that planet spins easily.

Repeat this with second planet. With two planets in place mount the sun-shaft in the center of boomerang using 60mm tube. The above big/small hole note applies here too. Do not add washer while mounting sun. The two planets and sun should now spin together. Add third planet.

The 60mm tube protrudes from the rear of boomerang part. Put a separator ring and and another bearing. Smaller hole plate should be next to separator ring.

Step 6: Installing the Planets

It's alive! Well... almost.

Place the planets in a frame but remember to keep all the gears in line. You should be able to spin everything using the knob.

If something is not working here then most probably you confused aligmenet of front-rear gears in the planets.

Add the last bearing on a tube with smaller hole plate facing away from the rear plate. Fix it all together with two nuts jammed against each other.

Congraulations! It's ready to use. Put in wines and find a good place to display your stand!
