Intro: Recycled Coat Hanger Coat Rack

Want to make a simple, fun coat rack that everyone will love? Try this Instructable and see what you think!

STEP 1: What I Used:

1. A 1" x 6" x 48" standard wood board left over from another project

2. 8 - 12 wooden coat hangers: These can be recycled from any closet. For this instructable I used new hangers for uniformity.

3. Wood Glue

4. Drill + Drill Bit sized for your coat hanger's dowel rod

5. 2 - #8 mounting screws/bolts and washers approximately 3-5" long (depending what you are mounting it to)

6. Hacksaw

7. Small gauge brad nails

8. Pneumatic nail gun

(I only used brad nails for extra strength and it is not a must)

STEP 2: Drill Your Holes...

Drill 2 holes 3" from top and 12" in from each, left and right, side for the 1" mounting screws/bolts and washers.

Drill enough holes to accommodate your chosen number of coat hangers. I chose to use 11 coat hangers spaced 4" apart. These holes should be drilled 1" from the top.

STEP 3: Cut and Glue Your Hangers...

Depending on how far out from the wall you want your coat hangers to be, mark and cut each exactly the same.

IMPORTANT: The dowel bar should be cut 1" LONGER in order to fill the holes you drilled and be glued. Allow prescribed time for your choice of glue to dry fully.

The top can be brad nailed through the back as I did. **Use a very thin gauge brad nail as not to splinter the wood

STEP 4: Mount the Rack to Your Wall...

Use proper mounting hardware and try to find a stud!

STEP 5: You Just Made Yourself the Coolest Recycled Coat Rack!

The top will hold notebooks, books, lunch bags, etc.

Thank you! It took me only 2 hours to make. The only 'problem' is that two or three hangers moved a little while attaching the plate to the wall. Although, I love how it has become!

so simple . so effective.. so genious...

Awesome origianal idea!! that's great thanks for the inspiration:)

Beautiful clever piece. I like the irony, if "irony" is the correct word to use. Great way to turn it all on it's head and still be functional. It in itself is a conversation piece.

Thank you Instructables team for my new t-shirt and the solar light prize! You guys R O C K !
