Introduction: SACHS MOPED CLUTCH REMOVAL

Need to remove the clutch from your Sachs moped motor? It's no biggie. Grab a wrench and follow along.....


I'll show you how to do it.

I made it at Techshop. The have a work bay where you can work on your car, motorcycle, moped... whatever! There are 3 of them around the SF Bay Area, so it's pretty convenient. You'll need:

A flathead screwdriver
A piston stop
A socket wrench with a 17mm socket and a sparkplug socket

Step 1: Getting Started

There are a few different Sachs motors out there, I believe the one that we're working with is the 504 model, though I could be wrong. Doesn't matter so much, they're all pretty similar. Rather than draining the oil from the motor, let's just lean the moped on it's side. Put down a piece of cardboard, or a rag, in case there is any spillage. Lean on a chair or milk crate or tree stump or something.

Step 2: Clutch Cover Removal

Grab your trusty flathead screwdriver and loosen the 5 screws that hold on the cover, then remove them. carefully pry off the cover, trying not to tear the clutch cover gasket underneath. If the gasket is too thrashed, you'll need to replace it during reassembly.

Step 3: Unscrew The, Uh... Thing.

Above the clutch, on the outside of the motor, is a flathead screw. Unscrew that.

Once it's loose, slowly pull it out and grab the spring and that is below the clutch arm. Don't let the spring fall into the motor. Continue removing the bolt and grab the spacer that is above the clutch arm. Don't let the spacer fall into the motor either.

Move the clutch arm gently off to the side. don't let the clutch cable fall out of it's slot.

Now remove the cap from the center of the clutch.

Step 4: Stop It!

Remove the spark plug and put in a piston stop. Use the socket wrench and 17mm socket to remove the nut on the end of the crankshaft which holds on the clutch.

You can now remove the clutch. I always try to stack everything the same way that it came out. I found a diagram online with the proper order for reassembly, which was helpful.
