Introduction: Sarah's Candy Telescopes

My daughter Sarah had a great idea.  She said, "Mom lets make candy telescopes for the Candy Contest!!!"  I asked her what we needed and she thought about it for a few minutes then gave me a list.  Listed below are her ingredients.  I hope you enjoy her idea.  Thanks.

Step 1: INGREDIENTS

2/3 cup water
2 cups sugar
1/4 tsp cream of tarter
1/2 tsp favorite flavor extract
   or
a few drops of concentrate fave flav oil  (we used peppermint)
liquorice laces
Sugar cones-the pointy ended ones
butter or cooking spray
bowl of ice water

Utencils:
2 quart pot
candy thermometer
wooden spoon
cookie sheet

Step 2: DIRECTIONS

Trim about an inch off the bottom of the cones.

Step 3: PREPARATIONS

Well, I couldn't figure out how to put an actual video here so here is the link.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFg793beoAU
It is of my DD unrolling the liquorice lace.  It's really exciting stuff.  LOL!!  The next is her splitting the lace in 2.  Doesn't she look excited? ;o}
Butter or spray the cookie sheet.  Get the ice water ready.

Step 4:

Add the first 3 ingredients into your pot and stir.  Put the thermometer on side of pot.

Step 5:

Turn on med high heat and cook without stiring until it reaches 300º F and a light carmel color.  About 10 minutes.  Quickly put in ice water and stir in your flavoring.  Watch carefully because it can burn quickly as we learned the night we tried this.  We redid the candy the next day.  It was late and the crew was getting tired even after eating the candy laces.  As you can see it is dark outside in the pic below, but in the first pic it is daylight.

Step 6:

Now for the fun stuff.  Place a puddle of the candy on the CS and immediately push a cone into the puddle.  Keep doing this until all the cones are on the sheet.  Now the candy should be stiffer, add a little onto the small hole.   While still soft push one end of the liquorice  into the top and wrap around the cone till you get to the bottom and add a dab of candy to glue it on.   If your candy hardens while you are still working just reheat till it is soft again.

Step 7:

I started out with 6 then there were 3 then 1 for me and mommy and 1 for the neighbor boy across the hall.  We still have enough candy and cones for 6 more, but I think I will try them with ice cream instead.
