Introduction: Shelf Made With Hinges Without Nuts and Screws

About: Hi I am Kriti ! A young product designer with interest in exploring materials and simple mechanisms.

Hello everyone :) After making the cardboard book stand click here to view I decided to take it to a level further and discover it with some other materials. This time I explored aluminium sheet bending and rope. As I am interested in doing mechanical stuff I tried to explore making hinges without any screws or nuts or fixing.

This shelf can be hanged and used to keep flower pots, small showpieces, small utility items, a shoe rack or anything you want. This can be used as a book organizer as well when kept side ways on the table. It's use is open to explorations.

Let's get started.....

Step 1: Making the Paper Template

We start by making the paper template of the piece to be made. Print the templates given. Now using a cutter finely cut the piece from the edges of the flat template.

Step 2: Collect the Materials Required

Materials-

Aluminium Sheet -2mm thick

Rope (any preferable pattern)- 4mm thick

Tools-

Center punch

Steel ruler

Drill bit- 4mm dia

Marker/pen

Sanding files

Sand paper

Step 3: Cutting the Metal Sheet

Take the dimensions from the template made and cut 6 identical pieces from the metal sheet. I used the shearing machine for cutting the exact pieces.

Here I am using 6 pieces to get the form I want to make, but you can use whatever number of pieces you want.

Step 4: Marking the Metal Sheet

After cutting the pieces, use the paper template to mark the points to be cut, fold and holed. Prepare the markings on the sheets properly to avoid errors.

Step 5: Cutting and Drilling Holes

Now we start with cutting of the grooves on the sheets for which I used the allcut machine. After cutting the grooves, drill holes on the marked area.

Tip- Always punch the spots where you want to drill holes to avoid slipping of drill bit while drilling.

To one of the pieces I drilled two extra holes on the plane surface and made keyholes to hang the shelf on the nails on the wall.

Step 6: Folding the Sheets

Fold the sheet according to the angles given in the drawing. I used sheet bending machine to get the correct angles.

Step 7: Sanding and Painting

After finishing with the folding, sand the pieces in the grooves, holes and overall body. Sanding gives a smooth surface finish. Now apply the primer coating to the pieces, let them dry and then apply water based paint. I choose mint color.

Step 8: Final Assembly of the Pieces

Join the pieces as given in the video. Now take the rope and pass it through the holes as given in the second video. Pass the ropes on both sides. After passing the rope through holes, tie knots at the end as given in the images.

Tip- Use a small piece of cello tape at the tip of rope being used. It allows easy passing of rope through holes.

And it's done:)...You can even increase or decrease the number of pieces as per the need.
