Introduction: Softening Hard Brown Sugar

About: I have a variety of hobbies from woodworking and construction to sewing and silhouette cameo work. I love to make stuff and am always looking for new ideas.

I hate wasting brown sugar because it’s gotten hard. I’ve had it get hard even a couple weeks after buying it. I live 18 miles from the nearest grocery store so it’s also very inconvenient to run to the store just for that. So I’ve found a good way to soften up brown sugar that has gotten hard. Fast and easy.

Supplies

Microwave

1 cup of hot tap water

Hard brown sugar

Step 1: Place Brown Sugar in a Microwaveable Bowl

Place about 2 cups of hardened brown sugar in a microwaveable bowl. You can see in the picture mine was in hard chunks. In the video you’ll see how soft it became.

Step 2: Place Hot Tap Water in Microwaveable Bowl in Microwave

Place hot tap water in a bowl and put in the microwave with the bowl of brown sugar. Microwave on high for 5 minutes. When 5 minutes is up DON’T open door and let set for 1 minute more - if I have time I let it set in the steamy microwave another 1 minute or so. Then check the brown sugar for softness. If all is not quite soft enough microwave another 1-1 1/2 minutes and check again. This should soften it enough to use. Can be put back in the bag and sealed well. Use soon as it could harden back up if not used soon enough. May repeat this if it does.

Here’s how mine came out.
