Introduction: Spicy Edible Fire Salts (Skyrim)

I thought I would take a break from cocktail making and share with you all a delicious little condiment brewing in my brain for a very long time. This, like the past few instructables I have made, is also mined from the never ending quarry of inspiration for me that is The Elder Scrolls. I have often seen other creators make some very convincing props based on ingredients from these games (especially the various salts), but I don't think I have seen one that was both aesthetically convincing and edible. Of course it had to be something that was true to it's namesake so I sought out a way in which to infuse coarse salt with the hottest spices I could conjure up while still keeping a delicate flavor balance that would delight one's palate rather than sear off your taste buds. I worked hard to try and make this a reality for all to share and enjoy, and I hope it pleases you!

Step 1: Ingredients & Tools

Get thee to some:

  • Coarse Sea Salt (17.5 oz)
  • Tomato Juice (2 Cups)
  • Ghost Pepper Sauce (2 Tsp)
  • Cayenne Pepper (1/2 Tsp)
  • Sriracha (2 Tbs)
  • Smoked Paprika (1/4 Tsp)
  • Measuring spoons
  • A medium or large sauce pan
  • A large spoon
  • A stove
  • A Colander or fine mesh sieve
  • A cheese cloth or paper coffee filter

Step 2: Cooking You Salts

  1. Pour your coarse salt into your sauce pan and place it on the stove at medium heat (adjust this as needed).
  2. Pour your tomato juice into the pan, along with your Sriracha, cayenne pepper, ghost pepper sauce, and smoked paprika.
  3. Stir everything together thoroughly, making sure that all ingredients are evenly distributed.
  4. Simmer this crazy mess, stirring occasionally, until the tomato juice has nearly evaporated. You will know you are close when your mixture starts to look like a red slushy.
  5. Once your tomato juice has reduced as far as it can go, strain your coarse salt through a fine mesh sieve or colander lined with your cheese cloth or coffee filter so that all you are left with is nice red, spicy crystals!

Using Your Fire Salts

If you could not tell by the ingredients list, this is one spicy bundle
of salty goodness! A little goes a long way. It's great for dry rubs, sprinkled on some shrimp skewers with a little lime juice, making your own jerky, bloody marys, or rimmed on an icy cold michelada glass! Use it any time you want your food or drink to melt some faces!
