Introduction: Spicy Warm Apple Cider

About: I'm a biologist interested in all things sciency. I love to figure out how things work and to make my own stuff, be it food, woodworking, electronics or sewing.

A cup of warm, spicy apple cider is perfect against the winter cold.

Not only does it taste great, it is also simple to make and a healthy treat.

Step 1: What You'll Need.

The only tools required are pot and stove.

1 l apple cider
2 pieces of cinamon bark
1 tea spoon of cloves
4 cardamom seed pods

Use apple cider that is not too sweet. If you can get some freshly pressed cider from a farm, or press your own, that gives the best flavor. If all you can find is sweet cider or juice, you can add some lemon or orange to give it some extra acidity. I like this combination of spices that remind me of Christmass, but you can of course experiment with the spices of your choice. A little chili gives an interesting sting, and a little fresh ginger is also nice together with the mentioned spices.

You can also add ground spices if that is what you have available, but be aware that this can make the drink feel a bit gritty in your mouth.

Step 2: Heat

Put everything in a pot and put it over the heat. It does not need to boil, so you can leave it over low heat. It takes a while for the flavors to develop, so let it sit for an hour or so. You can make a larger batch and keep it in the fridge for a few days.

I hope you enjoy this warm winter drink, whether you choose to drink it cuddled up in the sofa or out in the snow.
