Introduction: Stand Seat

The StandSeat is a multi-functional furniture that combines both music stand and common seat. It comes from a very basic need that guitar players often have, which is the necessity of an object to place their guitar when they are not using it, but also to have a comfortable place to sit and play. The StandSeat offers an easy way to sit and also to stand the instrument, and it's design made out of easy joints (without any other joints but itself) allows you to carry it and disassemble it any time you want.

Step 1: Materials and Tools

Wood: Our recommendation is to use a solid block of wood in order to get a good structure. The optimal width is 25 millimeters, but you can go down to 18 too. If so, you have to stretch the side joints (the Rhino model comes with a design for a 25 millimeters thick wood, so you would have to change them to 18). In this case we used a piece of a pinewood board, 18 millimeters width.

Leather: It has to be at least 3 millimeters thick. Make sure the leather is flat and has a regular surface, in order to be properly adjusted into the Laser Cutter. The color goes on you!

Laser Cutter: We used the Universal Laser System Cutter to cut the leather for making the seat. It provides an work zone of 800 x 450 millimeters.

CNC Router: Use an available CNC Router to cut the wood pieces.

For the post-manufacture:

Sandpaper: We suggest to use sandpaper to soften the wood pieces's edges.

Saw: To cut the final grooves we used a Makita electric saw.

Step 2: How Does It Works?

The StandSeat has two different uses:

1- Stand :

Put one of the A's standing and the other one laying down. Then just simply assemble them by joining their side joints.

2- Seat :

Both A's make a cross with each other, by joining their center joints. One of them is standing up, and the other one is up-side down.

Step 3: Main Pieces

There are two main components on the StandSeat, both related to a specific material:

1- Wood : There are four wood pieces, p1 and p2 (two of each), which combined conform two equal A's.

The fabrication of these pieces requires the use of the CNC Router, and a 1/4 inches diameter drill.

2- Leather : The Seat also requires a leather piece where you can sit on.

This piece does not need any post-production. Just introduce the flaps in their right rabbet and the piece is ready to use.

The fabrication of the Seat requires the use of the Laser Cutter. Make sure your cutter allows the use of a piece of leather of at least 470 x 520 millimeters (considering margins).

Down you can find the Rhinoceros model to fabricate all the wood pieces, and the dwg. file to cut the leather.

Step 4: Post-Manufacture

After all your pieces are ready (Wood and Leather), there are two final steps to make it work:

1- Cut : You have to make a cut in every p1 and p2 piece.

Use a tape saw or any saw that allows you to do the right cut.

Follow the picture above to draw the lines for the proper cut.

Make sure you don´t cut more than necessary! Otherwise the wood pieces could break when you sit on them.

2- Soften the edges : For a nice finishing, use the sandpaper to soften all the wood edges and faces. It will make your StandSeat look better!

Step 5: Grab a Stand...

Now your StandSeat is ready to use!
