Introduction: Sugar Free Gummy Bears

My Dad's a diabetic, but OH BOY does he love his candy! Hey?! Who doesn't? Especially at this time of the year, amiright?

Anyways, candy and sugar were a tricky topic growing up in a house where my Dad would always find our hidden stashes - so we soon started looking for healthier, and diabetic friendly alternatives. This recipe is super tasty, quick, easy and child-safe too if they have an adult handling the boiling water. These gummy bears are totally toddler approved too!


We need:

- 1 package of sugar free juice mix (7.5g). I used an apple flavour which gives a slighly acidic touch to the gummies.

- 2 Tablespoons (30 ml) unflavoured gelatin.

- 1 Tablespoon (15 ml) Erythitol (or your sweetener of choice).

- 1/3 cup cold water.

- Boiling water.

- Silicon molds for the gummies. The smaller your mold, the quicker they will set.

- Pipette, dropper, syringe or even a spoon for filling your molds as mess free as possible.

- Two heatproof bowls, one small enough to fit in the other.

Step 1: Mix!

Pour your 1/3 cup of cold water into the small heatproof bowl. Add the gelatin, sweetener and juice powder. Mix it up!

Step 2: Stir!

Stir well. Initially, you might find you have an applesauce like texture as the gelatin starts to bloom and swells a little - don't worry! Just mix it all up, and make sure you're clump free!

Step 3: Melt!

Add boiling water to the larger bowl, and gently lower your small bowl into the hot water. You want to use the heat from the water, to soften the gelatin mix. Stir until the gelatin has dissolved, and the mix is all syrupy. You won't get it to be transparent, but you don't want to see the gelatin granules.

Step 4: Fill!

Using a dropper or syringe, carefully fill the molds. If you don't have individual molds, you could always pour the mix into a tray, and cut into little cubes once it has set.

Keep the bowl containing the gummy/jelly mix in the second bowl of warm water - this helps keep the mix liquid for long enough to fill the molds easily.

Step 5: Fridge!

They will set quite quickly - normally by the time I am finished filling the molds, the gelatin has started setting.

Put them into the fridge for 15-20 minutes to ensure a clean and easy removal of the jellies.

They should pop out of the molds quickly and easily, without leaving any residue.

Step 6: Enjoy!

The gummy bears are ready to enjoy! They are non-sticky and can be stored in an airtight tupperware - if they last long enough to store!

These gummies do not need to be refrigerated and hold up well at room temperature. They will get a little chewer as time passes.
