Sugared Cranberries

Introduction: Sugared Cranberries

About: huge geek with a creative drive and too much free time

Yesterday, at our local Kroger, my grandmother insisted on getting some cranberries for our grandfather, who cannot survive Christmas without them. She went on to tell me about this delicious recipe for "Sugared Cranberries", which I definitely wanted to make. Although I have never tasted raw cranberries, the sugar part was calling me. Anything with sugar is delicious, so I told her to get some cranberries and sugar and make some.

We brought these home, and today, when my sisters and I were making gingerbread houses, she started to make some. I made sure to offer my help, and asked if it would be okay if I posted this on Instructables. Of course she agreed, and I told her that I would post this Instructable on my Facebook page. She didn't mind, so here we go!

Prep Time: About 10 minutes
Total Time: Around 25 minutes

A few things before we start, of course. I do not suggest this recipe if you do not like sour or sweet foods. Cranberries are EXTREMELY sour, but with the sugar, there is a good medium of sweet and sour. And also, do not try to make these two minutes before your Christmas feast. They do take a few minutes to make, so have at least ten minutes of free time to make these. Let's begin, shall we?

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients and Materials

To make these sugary snacks, you'll need:
cranberries (duh)- egg whites- sugar (we used organic cane sugar, I believe)

For the materials, you'll need:
paper towels- plastic bag (gallon)- colander- wax paper- a taste tester (I had the honour of occupying this position)

Step 2: Wash Your Cranberries

First, of course, your cranberries need to be cleaned. To do this, place the cranberries in your colander and turn the water on. Remember, friction is the key component to washing your cranberries. Make sure that not one of these cranberries are moldy, because "One rotten apple spoils the bunch." Yeah, no kidding.

After this, allow the cranberries to dry*. You don't want the liquids to get confused, or the egg whites to completely fall off.

*You do not necessarily have to dry off the cranberries. If you're actually trying to make these in the few minutes before your Christmas dinner, skip the drying, as it is not necessary. But it is suggested!

Step 3: Place in Bag

Now, place your cranberries in a plastic bag to dry. I suggest using a gallon bag, because of the quantity of cranberries you may have. You can do this or dry them off with a paper towel, which is what I would do myself. We had time, so we let them sit in the bag.

Step 4: Pour and Shake

Now comes the fun part! Pour in some egg whites, SEAL THE GALLON BAG, and shake! As you can see, I put a very important part in caps. This is because if you skip this, the contents of your bag will fly everywhere. So, shake with caution!

Oh, and I apologize for he fuzzy pictures. She was going really fast!

Step 5: Shake Some More, Shake Some More!

You can now pour in some sugar and shake this, too! Do not poor too much in, but don't not poor any in. We generously poured in sugar, as you can see. Again, view dangers from the last step please.

Step 6: Let 'em Dry!

Pour the contents of your bag onto some wax paper and let dry.

Step 7: Eat Up!

You can enjoy your sugared cranberries! I'm still waiting for them to dry, as I type this. I hope you enjoyed this, and I'm hoping to enter this in some type of contest, or the Sweet Tooth Contest. I would appreciate it SO much if you voted for this! Also, post some pictures of your cranberries and make some for your Christmas dinner! This is ideal for snacking, if you have a sweet tooth=). Happy holidays! Cheers!

To me, the more sugar, the better. They're a little too sour for my taste buds, but with the sugar, the sour flavor is more mild. Do try this recipe and give me your opinions! Thank you so much for viewing and Happy Holidays!

NOTE TO EVERYONE: After another session of testing these cranberries, I decided that they taste best after being left out for an hour or so. The crunchy texture will come through if this is done. Enjoy your cranberries! -LPT

These make a delicious treat or snack. They can also be used as a beautiful garnish on a holiday meal. Make a holly berry accent with fresh mint or basil leaves !! Low calorie and high in anti oxidants!

Sounds wonderful! How much (approx) of the egg white carton would you say you poured in there? I'm guessing that too much might make the bag a little soupy.

I have absolutely no idea, but I'm guessing it all depends on how much you're making... I think we used around half a cup. And yes, too much equals too soupy. But you want some on there so that the sugar will stick, so it's more of a personal opinion. Happy holidays! I hope you make these, and enjoy them as well=)
