Alright so not too long ago I contacted Superior Tool and asked them if they could send me some stuff to try out, so they told me they had a new “all in one” copper pipe repair kit and I thought it would be a great idea to talk about it and tell you all the good reasons why you should have one if you’re a homeowner.

So first of all, let’s say it, soldering can be intimidating for a beginner if you don’t know where to start. The first thing I would suggest is to watch my 5 minute “how to” guide on soldering a copper joint (How to Solder) before attempting anything, it’ll familiarize you with the tools, materials, and techniques you’ll need to get a properly soldered joint as a starter.

Step 1: Soldering Can Get Expensive..

Now, if you’re just a DIYer trying to repair a burst pipe at home for example, you don’t necessarily need a full blown soldering kit to get the job done correctly. A proper plumber’s kit could get quite costly and really isn’t mandatory if you’re only going to be using it once or twice in a life time. A typical soldering kit could be worth close to 150$ if you count in every individual component. This kit only costs 50$ and will get the job done just as well. You could, of course, call a certified plumber to get the job done or, you can DIY and save time and money.

Step 2: The All in One Repair Kit

Pipe cutter: https://amzn.to/2U0FG2l

Pipe brush: https://amzn.to/2Et5HSC

Flux: https://amzn.to/2Et5HSC

Pre-soldered couplings: https://amzn.to/2Et5HSC

This All in one copper pipe repair kit from Magna/Superior Tool, has all the tools and materials you need to permanently repair a burst or perforation in a copper pipe yourself. The kit comes with a torch, some soldering paste, a pipe, and fitting cleaner, as well as a mini pipe cutter, a 6” long piece of copper pipe and 2 pre-soldered couplings. Obviously, the kit as is, is only good for a repairs on ½” piping but could work with a ¾” repair just as well.

The packaging also includes a set of basic instructions on how to use the repair kit which are easy to understand but don’t go into details and that’s why I suggest watching the video I mentioned before.

Step 3: The Fix!

Alright so let’s simulate a real life burst on a ½” copper line that we have here, with the water already shut-off to start the repair. The first thing that needs to be done is to cut the damaged area out with the provided pipe cutter and make sure there is no more water left inside the pipe by tipping it down just enough to get it all out. At this point, you could grab a utility knife to deburr the inside of the pipe to make sure it’s opened up all the way.

Then use the pipe cleaner to clean both the pipe and the fittings before applying the soldering paste. Apply the soldering paste and assemble everything together, what’s fun about the kit is that you don’t need to worry about if you are using too much or not enough solder as the couplings as packed with just the right amount of it for the repair, so really it’s a no-brainer.

With everything assembled, heat the fittings till the solder melts, you should see it start to seep out from the fitting, which is a good indicator that the joint is complete. Once you’re done wipe the excess flux off and test it out to see if everything is ok and that there are no leaks.

Step 4: That's How You Save $$$

A call like this could cost well over 100$ if done by a professional and could leave you without water for a while so having a kit like this ready to be used at all times to me is a real time and money saver. If you guys are interested in having one, go visit superiortool.com they have a ton of other plumbing tools that are affordable so I’ll leave a link in the description box below if you are interested.
