Introduction: The "Stump" Coffee Table

About: Hello, my name is Matthew, I have 9 siblings. I LOVE Woodworking (DIYing) and me and my family are the Galicinski Family Band. Me and my brother Micah love composing music, please check us out on youtube and s…

So I found this hollow log right outside my workshop one day and I decided that I was going to make a seat. But then I came to the problem that the top wasn't flat, so I called my woodworking grandpas (and talked to my dad). One of the grandpas told me how I should make a seat, and the other grandpa and my dad (who are father and son) said it looked like a toilet.... I decided to make a coffee table instead.

So this is my instructable how to make a coffee table or toilet table.

Step 1: The Outside

Use a chisel to take off all the wood that is hanging off the inside(as shown in gif). When you are doing this you want to follow the outside shape. Make it as smooth as you can then sand it with about 80-100 grit.

Step 2: The Outside

Sand really well starting at 80 grit. You will sand a lot later in the stain/polyurethane step, so I wouldn't go higher then 250 grit.

Step 3: The Top

Cut a piece of wood from a tree that is 20-32 inches long and two inches thick (mine is 20 inches). I wish we had a tree that was 25 to 28 inches, I just found mine to be a little small.

Then sand it and use the chisel, basically removing the cut marks.

Step 4: Stain/ Polyurethane

Put three or four coats of stain on the bottom sides. Put about one or two coats in the inside. Then put the same amount of coat of polyurethane on the outside, sand with 320 after every coat dries.

Do the same for the top, but you don't need to put stain on the bottom, just put on polyurethane.

Step 5: Making the Paper and Holes

It took me lots of time to figure out how to do this but before I figured out how I was going to do it I drilled six holes in the bottom, but you only need three so, drill ONLY THREE HOLES one inch each into the bottom. Then staple four pieces of paper together. Wrap the paper on the bottom and tap. After that, use a one inch dowel to find the holes by puncturing the paper in the places where the holes are (as shown in second pic). Slowly take the tape off the bottom while keeping the same shape. Then put it on the bottom of the top piece where you want the bottom to go (as shown in third pic), then drill three holes where the paper holes are, about two inches deep. Sorry about my mistake.....

Then Measure and cut the dowels to fit in each hole.

Step 6: Glue

Then glue the dowels to the top and bottom.

Step 7: Done!!!

You are done!!
