I am going to describe how to make and use a small device called the Shot Dropper, that a few students and myself designed for class last year. (Adam Rusiski, Wes Thomas, Carson Sio, and Ji Yeon). The problem that we were solving is the need for two hands, when doing a Jager -Bomb or any kind of alcohol-bomb. (Yes, this was a school project.) In a nutshell, the Shot Dropper, is a small clip that holds a shot glass to the inner rim of a pint glass by friction. With a light squeeze of the clip, the rubber compresses,releasing the shot glass into the drink below. Allowing you the ability to single handedly do a Jager-Bomb, while talking on the phone, hi-fivin your boys or to most likely signal the bartender to bring you another.

Step 1: Step 1. Preparing Materials

Making The "Shot Dropper"

Using a bandsaw, start by cutting a sheet of 1/8th inch acrylic down to a piece that is 2 x 7.25 inches and a piece of 3/4 inch plywood down to 4 x 7 inches.

Step 2: Step 2. Create Form to Be Molded From

Use a bandsaw to cut the top of the plywood to the round form of the shot dropper. Sand with 60 Grit sand paper to make a smooth form and mark two points on top, 1/2 inch in from the ends for drilling.

Step 3: Step Three: Drilling and Screwing

After marking two points on the plywood, do the same for the Acrylic. Then using a 1/8 inch drill bit, drill two holes in both the plywood and the Acrylic. Finally with two screws, attach the piece of Acrylic to the top of the piece of plywood.

Step 4: Step Four: Heat Forming Acrylic

Using a heat gun, bend the Acrylic over the mold and clamp it for a minute or so until cool.

Step 5: Step Five: Clean Up Acrylic / Mixing and Pouring Rubber

After removing the Acrylic from the mold, cut away the area with the drilled holes and tape up the two ends so that you are left with a little trough. Using a Urethane Rubber (Smooth On ReoFlex 30), mix the two 1 :1 part mixtures and pour it into the Acrylic trough. (For best results with white finish, us Smooth On PMC 724)

Step 6: Step Six: Cut to Pieces and Cut Slits

Using a bandsaw, cut the long Acrylic piece into 1/2 inch pieces and cut out notches in rubber where the glasses will fit in. (The now, around 5 inch piece of Acrylic can be cut up into about 10 Shot Droppers.)

Using your thumb, index finger and middle finger grab dropper and clip it to shot glass.

Step 8: Step Two: Clip Shot Glass to Pint Glass

Take dropper and shot glass and clip them to the inner rim of a pint glass.

Step 9: Step Three: Squeezing the “Shot Dropper”

When the user is ready they can give a little squeeze, using their index finger, to compress the rubber which would release the shot glass into the drink below.
