Thin Rip Jig

This thin-rip jig is used to make thin strips on the table saw accurately. It avoids the safety issue associated with ripping stock while the blade is close to the fence.

Step 1: Building Blocks

Cut two thin pieces of stock. Router the base piece to create a track for the smaller piece.

Step 2: Shape

Drill a hole in the front of the tracking piece and cut an angle around the hole Drill a second hole in the top tracking piece to create a bolt track. When drilling this hole drill through both the base piece and tracking piece so that they are in alignment. Router the bolt track from this drill point.

Step 3: Miter Slots

Cut two thin pieces of wood. The first will fit into the groove at the base of the miter slot. The second will sit on top of that piece and rise about a centimeter above the table top. Glue together.

Step 4: Groovy

Router a groove in bottom of the base piece to fit the miter slot piece. The base piece should sit flush with the table top.

Step 5: Hardware

Countersink the bottom of the base piece to hide the head of the tracking bolt.

Step 6: Oil

Finish the wood with Danish Oil.

Step 7: Glue

Glue the tracking piece to the base piece.

Step 8: Bearing

Attach a bearing to the front of the tracking piece. I used a skateboard bearing.

Step 9: Rip

Attach the tracking piece to the base and rip some strips.
