Introduction: Tiny Terrarium With a Live Baby Succulent

About: My day job is in web development, but I love all things making and coding.

Plants and miniatures are two of my favorite hobbies.

Putting them together makes it even better

Supplies

Materials

  • propagated succulent
  • preserved moss
  • dirt
  • acrylic paint
  • polymer clay
  • tiny rocks
  • glass terrarium sphere or other small container

Tools

  • exacto knife
  • tiny brush
  • a means to bake the clay once it is sculpted.

Step 1: The Tiny Plant

To make a tiny plant like this one take a succulent, I used a jade, and pull of a leaf carefully making sure not to damage the end. Place on dirt and water frequently. Over time a new plant will appear. I let mine grow a couple weeks till it was the correct side and then cut off the big leaf from the previous plant and put in the terrarium with dirt. Although succulents prefer sandy dirt I used good old clay filled Nebraska dirt to maintain stability.

Step 2: The Base

Next I added a layer of preserved moss you can find at a craft store. Real moss works great but I did not have the time to grow it. Just press it down in the dirt and use water to make it stay put. I also added tiny rocks I had found to fill the area.

Step 3: Making the House

For the house I found a reference image I liked and looked at the base structure. The base structure of many things are just triangles and rectangles like what I used. I created the house out of polymer clay backed it in many intervals and reiterated its shape with an exacto knife.

Step 4: Painting the House

Finally to paint it I just used a little patience and a littler brush. I started with a white base coat and then painted the sides of the house. I followed that with a dark grey roof with green stippling on the top to continue the mossy feel. I also painted the chimney a brick color. Lastly I used a small permaniate marker to make the window frames and doors and just set it in the terrarium. I got the terrarium a long time ago and it came with seeds but it is possible to use anything like a small teacup or even the saucer from it.
