How to fix a hole in your wall.

Supplies

You will need a drill with a Philips head bit, Compound, Compound tape, Putty knife, drywall sanding block, 1 1/2 drywall screws, Tape measure, pencil, Utility knife, New drywall piece and 1x3 wood strip. Not included (SAW)

Step 1: Cut the Hole to a Square

First use your utility knife to cut a square hole in the drywall, Cutting out all broken pieces.

Step 2: Bevel All Edges of the Square

Using your utility knife cut at a 45 degree angle at all sides of the drywall so the compound can sit nicely.

Step 3: Cut and Screw in the Wood Strips

This is to back your drywall patch piece. Cut these with an extra two inches above and below your hole. Install these vertically parallel with half of it visible and half not. Screw into place with 2-3 screws sunk below flush level but not breaking the paper.

Step 4: Cut Your New Drywall Piece to Size and Screw Into Wood

Cut your new drywall piece from extra drywall to size of hole with the utility knife and screw this into the wood.

Step 5: Tape Over the Edges

Now with your tape lay it over the visible edges to join the pieces together.

Step 6: First Coat of Compound

This should use the most compound and apply this vertically then wait for it to dry. Cover your tape, screws and hole.

Step 7: Second Coat

This should be less than the last coat but layer this horizontally and wait for it to dry.

Step 8: Third Coat

After your second coat is dried install this coat vertically but with less mud then before to make a smoother finish making sure no tape is visible.

Step 9: Sanding

Once the third coat is dry, sand the mud to make it smooth and flush with the wall.

Step 10: Paint

After you have sanded paint your wall to its color and you have successfully patched a hole in a wall!
