Wee-Wes Atom

This is a project I am posting for my 8-year-old son, Wesley. He is the youngest of 5 boys and LOVES Instructables!!! He saw the 3D project and told me "I think I can win the printer if you help me share the project!" Who can turn that down?

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies...

We had an idea for a 3D-model of an atom. Rather than wire, he thought the clear plastic of a 2-liter bottle would be neat - because it disappears in a photo! Super simple to make... Here is what you need

• 1x-clear 2-liter bottle
• Sharp scissors
• Bouncy balls.
• Glue that works on plastic.

Wes used hot glue, but super glue would work if you tape it together while drying. Be sure and remove the tape when you are done. Super glue would be completely clear, where the hot glue is somewhat whitish.

Step 2: Cut Strips... Glue.

Wes, using sharp scissors, cut strips (about 1/2" wide) the length of the 2-liter bottle.

Use your choice of glue to bind the ends of the strips. 2-together makes an oval ring about 4" x10"

Using the same glue, tack the loops together so there is a single unit of loops.

Step 3: Glue on the Balls...

Wes use garden snips to cut the bouncy balls in half.

He used hot glue to glue both halves onto the plastic strips - a ball per strip and in random order.

Step 4: Enjoy!

There are plenty of other things that you can do with this. Wes thought of adding wire (like from a coat hanger) to suspend a ball in the center (to look like a nucleus.) If it were not for the hot glue, the rings would be almost completely transparent - so it was novel idea he had for the rings.
