Introduction: WeftWash Prototype

WeftWash is a perforated comb board that keep hair extensions detangled during washing, air drying, displaying, storing, and transporting processes.

The purpose of WeftWash is to decrease friction during these processes to increase the longevity of the hair extensions.Friction is the number one cause of fraying that ruins the health of the hair follicle.

Combing the wefts through WeftWash before washing speeds up the washing process because water and shampoo are evenly distributed over the hair. The wet hair can then be hung to air dry without the need to brush or towel dry the hair while its in its most vulnerable state. Because the hair is drying detangled the hair will tangle less while being worn.

Stylist can use WeftWash as an advertising display. Typically hair is sold in cheap plastic bags that create static and friction that stress the hair follicles.Having a display for their hair will increase the perceived value of their products so stylist can charge more for their hair.

Step 1: Create Pattern

In Adobe Illustrator create a new file. The size should be 11" x 18". 11" is the largest weft size in the typical set of hair extensions. The length can vary from 10"-22" depending on the length of the hair extensions.

Using the circle tool create 1cm x 1cm circles 0.5cm a part from one another. Repeat the pattern through the entire page

In between these circle create two more .32cm dots. The small dots should <0.5cm apart from one another

Save the file as a SVG file

Step 2: Prepare Physical Materials

Cut a piece of foam board into a 11" x 18" rectangle

Cut plastic wire into 1in. Every two .32cm dots on the SVG pattern there will be one wire. Except to cut 500 pieces of wire depending the the size of your board.

Step 3: Laser Print Pattern Onto Styrofoam Board

Import the SVG file into Inkscape.

Align the Styrofoam board and the laser.

Run the laser print so the pattern is burned into the Styrofoam.

Step 4: Build the Prototype

Punch out the larger holes created by the laser printer to perforate the board.

To create to combs thread the 1in plastic wire through the dots on the board to create a loop. All of the loops need to be on the same side of the board to detangle to wefts.
