Introduction: Desktop Injection Moulding (DIY)

With this instructable we like to show you how to make a product using the desktop injection moulding technique. We explain how you can do it yourself.

We used polymorph plastic as material.

Step 1: Making the Mould

We made 2 types of moulds.

The first one is made by a 3D-printer and the second we made by milling a piece of wood.

When you make the moulds you need to keep in mind that you can not make difficult designs.
We made the mistake that our material is not really liquid. So we couldn't use our second mould because of the wrong shape.

A second thing you have to keep in mind is the positioning of the sprue.

The shape of our 3D-printed mould is a diamond. We made the mistake to place the sprue on top of the diamond so the piont at the top has a cilindrical form. A better place to point the sprue was on a flat surface.

Step 2: Heat, Pour and Dry

To heat the plastic.

You need a can of water and a fire.
The polymorf plastic clits together and becomes a little bit plastic at 60 degrees.

Next you take a conical form to press the plastic in the mould.

You'll need a bit of power to push the material in the mould.

Step 3: Enjoy

After 15 minutes the product becomes dry.

To be sure you let it rest for 30 minutes in the mould.
