Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

For these butterscotch bars, you will need:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or margarine
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Step 2: Combining Ingredients

First, combine the brown sugar and oil into a medium bowl and mix. Once mixed, add in the egg and vanilla to the same bowl. Blend all the ingredients in the bowl well. Next, in a separate medium bowl, pour in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Then, slowly mix the dry materials a little before adding them in to the other bowl. Make sure to mix carefully, and try not to let anything spill out.

Step 3: Before Baking...

Grease a medium-sized pan with butter or oil. Try to grease the sides as well, so that when bars are cooked, they will come out easily. Now, slowly pour the mixture into the pan. Spread it around evenly, and then place the bars in the oven.

Step 4: Baking

Bake for 30 minutes. When you take the pan out to check on the bars, the edges should be a little crispy. Don't worry if the bars seem undercooked; the center of the bars are supposed to be a little gooey. You could place it in the refrigerator to cool, or just just leave it out for a bit. After it cools down, cut into pieces and enjoy! If there are any leftovers, they can be refrigerated and eaten later.

Step 5: Complete!

Now that you have seen how the butterscotch bars can be made, you can try it out for yourself! An optional ingredient to add into the bars is 1/2 cup of nuts. Butterscotch bars are super simple and fun to make, and the taste is worth the time. This is a great recipe to make because it's sweet and doesn't take too long to make. Butterscotch bars are a tasty and easy treat to make, which is why I recommend you try it!
