Introduction: Car Phone Holder

I had the fun challenge to find a way to mount a phone holder in a Pacifica. I settled on making a plug that wedges into a small cubby hole below the dash. I am not a fan of the look of 3D print items, so I decided to incorporate wood into the design.

Step 1: Prototyping

I went through a lot of prototypes on this print. I first had a few plug sizes to make. Once I found the size that fits well into the cubby hole I dove right in with a design. I started with the vertical phone style, but when I was testing I quickly learned it was in the way. So I settled on a horizontal design tucked out of the way. Each prototype I made had some sort of annoyance when taking the phone in and out. So I kept hacking away until I found the right ergonomics.

Step 2: Finished Design

I finally settled on this design. It has a pocket for the charger as well as a plug to keep it in (not pictured). I still put a tiny bit of hot glue in to keep it from rotating. Before the glue cooled I put my phone in to find the spot it easily slides into the charger.

For the wood, I just made 3mm pockets for them to pop into and cut them out with a laser cutter.

Step 3: Finished

Since the prototypes had little infill they mushed in further, so I had to modify the final one due to the higher infill. Also I didn't leave enough clearance between the charger plug and the wood on the end. Figured it is on the driver side so I didn't bother modifying it. Otherwise I am happy with it and it gets the job done. If anyone has a Chrysler Pacifica I am happy to share the design.

Thanks and enjoy
