Create Your Own Latin Signet Ring With Tinkercad

This was a Makerspace collaboration with the 7th grade Latin teacher to have students make Latin Signet Rings. It ended up being a wonderful way for students to learn the basics in Tinkercad and take a personalized creation home with a significant Latin phrase or word.

Supplies:

Tinkercad accounts (Tinkercad TEACH now makes this easier than ever)

Devices to access Tinkercad

3D filament

stamp wax (or make your own with Crayons and glue sticks)

Ring sizer

Digital calipers

Strong Adhesive (like epoxy)

Finishing materials for a 3D print

Step 1: Sizing Your Ring

In order to design the ring in Tinkercad, students must know their ring size. I had a set of jeweler's sizing rings, which students used to find their size of the finger where they wish to wear the ring and then measure the inside dimension with digital calipers.

Alternatively, here is a paper version you can use to find size, with a table to determine inside diameter.

Step 2: Designing in Tinkercad - the Ring

This ring is a nice way to learn Tinkercad and to also extend into some new skills. I did a demonstration of the process for students, then handed out the instruction sheet for them to follow independently. Their ring measurements will be important in this step.

Step 3: Designing in Tinkercad - the Ring Top

This step requires the use of TEXT or SCRIBBLE and a MIRROR command. A tip is to make sure the text is not too thin.

Step 5: Glue the Top of the Ring to the Base and Stamp Away!

I had to use a strong epoxy to make something strong enough to hold.

The picture shows model magic as the stamping medium, but wax would work better. Here is a similar Instructable that made homemade wax from crayons and glue sticks!

Another discovery I made since we did this project was this great Instructable explaining how to smooth 3D prints. Being able to smooth these out would have made them better.
