Introduction: D.I.Y: Chain Necklace

About: I like crafts, beauty, and pictures.

Over the past two weeks I began purchasing basic things to create my own jewellery. After receiving my eyepins, jumprings, 5 metres of chain and lobster clasps in the mail I decided to begin :)

So this is a tutorial on how to create the necklace I'm wearing in the image above.

You will need the following:
*Pliers (for jumprings, you can also use tweezers to open them)
*Something to cut the chain (I used the scissors that is already attached to my round nose pliers)
*Necklace chain (The length of yours will depend on how long you want your necklace to hang, but it will be folded afterwards mine was 50cm)
*2x Jumprings
*Lobster clasp
*Thick chain of any kind

You don't have to have the exact type of thick chain I have in the image, any will work as long as you're able to thread the necklace chain into the end of the thick chain.

Please refer to this if you are lost at any point :) I hope this is helpful!
The black line is the necklace chain.

Step 1: Step 1: Measuring the Length of Your Necklace

1. Measure around your neck and leave out about 1/6th as that length will be where the thick chain will go (This will differ depending on how long your thick chain is and how long you want the necklace to be!).

My measurement was 25cm.

Step 2: Step 2. Double the Length

Fold it over to double the length so, 25cm = 50cm

We are folding it over as the necklace will have two layers of chain.

Step 3: Step 3. Cut!

Cut! You can leave a bit excess if you want since we'll measure it again later.

Step 4: Step 4: Opening Jumprings

Use the pliers or tweezers would work to ppen 2 jumprings.

Step 5: Step 5: Thread the Chain

Thread one end of the necklace chain into one open end of the thick chain.

Step 6: Step 6: Thread the Other End

Thread the other end of the necklace chain into the other end of the thick chain.

Step 7: Step 7. Thread It All the Way Through

Thread it all the way through until it looks like this. It will be in a U shape with a loose end on either side.

Refer to the diagram (Image 2) as this will look the exact same.

Step 8: Step 8. Attach Jumpring and Lobster Clasp

Pick up one end of the necklace chain (img 1) and add a jumpring (img 2).

Leave the jumpring still open and add the lobster clasp (img 3)

Step 9: Step 9: Attach Jumpring to Other End of Necklace Chain

Now with the other end of the necklace chain, hook a jump ring through and close shut.

Step 10: 10. Hook Either Ends Together

Hook the clasp to the closed jump ring.

Step 11: 13. Level the Second Chain Up and Adjust

At this point, you are to measure it on yourself and see if the necklace fits the way you like it, remember that this necklace has two layers so they both have to be the same size!

Cut in the middle of the extra necklace chain. If it is too long, cut extra but make sure that both sides are even!

Step 12: Step 12: Attach Loose Chains to Correct Jumpring

Once it's been cut off hook the left loose chain to the left jump ring and right loose chain to the right jump ring.

(img 2): Unhook the left jumpring

(img 3): Put on the left chain that had just been cut. There will be 3 things dangling off this jump ring, two chains and a clasp. Close shut.

(img 4): Unhook the right jump ring.

(img 5): Put on the right chain that we had just cut. There will be two things dangling from this jumpring, these would be the two chains. Close shut.

(img 6) And we're done!

Step 13: Your Necklace Is Now Complete!

I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial and found it easy to understand. Please ask away if you need any help!

I would love to see your finished pieces if you try out this D.I.Y.
