Introduction: DODOcase VR Kit Masque of the Red Death Mod

About: At the Eureka! Factory, we love making things, and thinking about things, and learning about things, and enjoy helping empower others to a curiosity driven life, too, so we can all live and learn in meaningful…

The Eureka! Factory worked with Land O' Lakes Branch Library in Pasco County for the October Instructables Build Night with DODOcase. LOL Library has a robust Teen Advisory Board responsible for Rockus Maximus, a hugely successful Battle of the Bands; Lamecon, an immensely popular Anime convention; and the Edgar Allan Ohms, the only FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team in the country based at a public library. And they're creating a makerspace at the library, to boot.

We hosted the build with the Edgar Allan Ohms, during their weekly meeting. After watching the instructional video and learning a bit about how DIY virtual reality kits work, they dug right into the DODOcase kits with enthusiasm.

The DODOcase Leather Mod was the first Instructable to come out of our Build Night. This Masque of the Red Death Mod was created by a student inspired by the Edgar Allan Ohms' patron saint, Edgar Allan Poe, author of the book of the same name.

Step 1: Materials

  • DODOcase VR Kit
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Red paint or markers
  • Glue

Step 2: Build Your DODOcase VR Case

You'll be modifying in the inside of your cardboard headset for this mod.

Instruction for building the kit can be found here: http://www.dodocase.com/pages/vrkit1

Step 3: Create Paper Insert

Create a paper insert pattern to match the inside proportions of the DODOcase headset

Step 4: Get Gory!

Knock yourself out with the red paint!

Step 5: Glue Insert Into DODOcase Viewer

Glue your artful gore into place, then tuck in your smartphone and enjoy the view!

You can also take the mod out further by customizing the outside of the viewer so those watching the watcher can get grossed out, too.

Thanks, Edgar Allan Ohms, for a nice thematic mod!
