Step 1: Prepare Your Mind for an Idea

This might sound strange. But if you don't have a good idea of your first painting and you just want to try yourself in oil paint - this was the case for me - you might spend a long time to decide what to paint. The other option is that you made up your mind and there is a strong vision in your mind shining there and waiting for you to bring it to reality in paint.

So , I wanted to try myself in oil paint itself and wondered what to paint ?

I found a good idea to find this idea by searching online for a tip. I couldn't find a clue online and then decided to search inside my mind for a favorite theme or subject to paint.

I recently visited Malaysia and I really was impressed. I wanted to record this memory in oil paint of my own.

I got a pencil and a large sketch notebook and started to draw a picture of what I had in memory of this beautiful place.

I remembered this beautiful island in Malaysia , Langkawi Island.

Then I started to draw a scene on Langkawi Island beach. I really liked it and then I decided that this scene is what I really want to paint in oil.

Step 2: Prepare Your Stuff

After you decided what to paint , you need to prepare your stuff and working area.

- Protective paper. To save your home from being colored.

- Tissue Paper. To make minor correction if color or solvent spreads on board.

- White drawing board. Amazon DE

You can buy this one with wooden frame around the board or make it your self. ( I bought it )

- Colors. Amazon DEeBay

I used colors more than I thought I would.

- Brushes. Amazon DE eBay

I used only 2 sizes of brushes.

- Oil. I didn't use it. But I may use it in next paintings to make the color thicker.

- Thinner Solvent. Amazon DE

I used this one very much. Don't use Thinner Solvent from Hardware stores. It is different.

- Color Palette. Amazon DE eBay

Besides the brushes , this is the best thing in oil paint. You 'll love its looking after you finish painting.

- Plastic glass or container.

You need to put some solvent to use from time to time and you don't want to waste all the Thinner Solvent by coloring the whole bottle with the first color you use.

Step 3: Start Painting

Get your board upright and start using your brushes.

Before you can use your Brushes and colors , you need to put some solvent in the plastic glass and immerse the brush in it.

Choose your painting dominant color , open it and put some on the palette.

Draw your picture outlines in the basic dominant color. Here I used Blue to draw the sky , sea , mountains , tree , sun and boats.

This step enables you to determine colors of separate areas on your painting.

Step 4: Colorize Your Painting

Color each area you drawn on your painting with its basic dominant color. For example, sky blue , sea cyan , sand yellow , etc .

Don't yet think about realism or exact tone of parts on your painting. That is a later step.

Just fill all white areas in the board with basic colors and don't let blue boundaries be visible.

This is very important for your paint.

Step 5: Add Artistic Touches

As you continue to paint, you will find yourself more confident in using brushes , solvent and mixing colors together to get the exact tone of your desire for each object.

You can make color gradients and shadows.

You 'll find also that it's time to add realistic touches to your painting. They may be small details , but they add life to you art.

Step 6: Add You Signature

Don't forget to add your signature and date to your master piece.

I hope this instructable has encouraged you to start oil painting and made it clear and simple.

I hope you enjoy oil painting.
