Introduction: DIY Leather Card Holder

About: Hey, I'm Muhaimina! A Craftaholic person (or Witch if you may say!). Obsessed with swirls and polka dots... and Instructables is pretty much my second home! Follow my IG Blog https://www.instagram.com/the_craf…

After making the leather purse I had a little leather left but couldn't just throw it away. I kept thinking and was sure that very soon an idea would pop up. Well, finally I decided to make a card holder, of course because I didn't have much leather and could use only 4 X 8 inches of leather. Anyways, I hope you like the card holder :)

Step 1: Materials Needed

To make this leather card holder you'll need:

  1. Leather or faux leather,
  2. Scissor and x-acto knife,
  3. Needle and wax thread,
  4. Awl,
  5. Glue,
  6. Golden fabric paint and size zero paint brush.

Step 2: Cutting the Parts

You'll need 3 peaces of leather to make this card holder,

3 X 7 inches for the main part- the holder,

0.75 X 3 inches for the flap,

0.5 X 3 inches for the closure.

Step 3: Attaching the Flap

You can glue the flap or stitch it as well. I did both.

The piece I used for making the flap is 0.75 X 3 inches,

Place the 0.75 X 3 inches leather piece on any one side of the main piece, making sure to place it on the center of the width,

Glue half an inch of the flap leather with the main piece (see picture).

I did a small cross stitch on it as well to make sure the flap is secure.

Step 4: Completing the Closure

Now, we're going to work on the other side of the main leather piece.

Take an x-acto knife and make 2 slight cuts on it as shown in the picture. The cuts I made were 1 cm. The cuts should be at least 0.5 inch below the side.

Take the 0.5 X 3 inches leather piece and insert it through the cuts as shown in the picture,

Flip the leather to the other side and apply glue on both sides of the small piece, to make sure it's secure.

Step 5: Stitching the Sides

Use the awl to make holes on both sides of the main piece,

Use a ruler and pencil to measure and mark the positions for the holes. i did free hand punching :p

After making the holes fold the leather into half, making sure the holes on both sides match,

Prepare needle and thread,

Do stitches on both sides, through the holes. I did flat blanket stitches.

Step 6: Designing

I'm into golden design these days, so I couldn't resist and added a little design on the bottom of the card holder.

I used golden fabric paint and made the design by using a size zero coloring brush.

After designing the card holder allow the paint to dry for a while, you don't want a smudged design -_-

There, done! Simple and classy card holder in a few minutes ^_^

Enjoy!
