Introduction: Making Jewelry at Work

About: Too much wood, too little time.

It was a slow day at the office so in between patients I thought to myself, "man I really miss my girlfriend lemme go nuts with our equipment." Thus, I ended up making her a key chain with various glues and pieces I found around the lab.

Items Used:

  • Pendant
  • Paperclip
  • Pliers
  • Jump Ring
  • Crown and Bridge Cement
  • Spatula
  • Glass Slab
  • Dental Drill
  • Various Carbide Burrs

Step 1: Dental Jewelry

I've strongly disliked designs that cut through the pendant so this key chain actually has a hidden anchor but we will get to that soon for now go get yourself a shiny paperclip and some needle nose pliers.

Did you know that jewelry pliers and dental pliers are basically the same thing? Well they are, so grab whatever you want to bend those braces with and begin to modify your paperclip.

You will want to use the bends to your advantage and make what looks like a jump ring on the end of a long straight piece of metal.

Step 2: Bzzz Bzzzz

Everyone I've ever talked to has a spare collection of carbide burrs, so even you must have one. Take your tool. whether it be a drill, saw, or router and cut off the remainder of the jump ring loop. Smooth off the edge and get ready to size it.

Step 3: Bend It Like.. I Dunno a Bent Wire

Measure the depth of your drilled hole with either the worlds smallest caliper or eyeball it cause real innovators don't need standardized measurements.

We are going to anchor the anchor in place but to stabilize it you will need to put a small bend in the wire. The pressure alone will keep your jump ring in place if done correctly.

Step 4: Glue!

Well really this is crown cement, it's used in securing teeth in your mouth. Today however it's going to secure your love in place. Mix your cement or anything else you have laying around and stick it in the hole.

Step 5: Final Touches

Clean off excess glue/cement and add a real jump ring so that you can hang the pendant off a pair of keys. Or leave the small one there and turn it into a necklace.
