Introduction: Pokémon Detective Pikachu Cake

About: Hello and Welcome to In the Kitchen With Matt. I am your host Matt Taylor. My goal for the show is to teach you how to cook really good food at home for cheap. Eating out everyday can get expensive, but it doe…

In this instructable I will show you how to make a Pokémon Cake, more specifically a Detective Pikachu cake. The Detective Pikachu movie came out today and it looks like a pretty awesome movie, and Ryan Reynolds seem to have been the perfect choice to play the part. I haven't done a themed cake in awhile so I thought this would be a good time to do another one. This Pokemon Detective Pikachu cake is pretty easy to make, and I am not the best cake designer, so if I can do it, you can do it, let's get started!

Don't forget to follow me and check out my other instructables. :)

If you have any questions comments leave them down below and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Follow the steps below or watch the video tutorial or do both. :)

Step 1: Things You Will Need

You may print the recipe here if you like.

There are several things that you will need and that will help you make the cake.

Step 2: Prep the Template

First you will need some sort of Pikachu Template to follow you can use this one or create your own. Now using scissors cut around the Detective Pikachu. If you notice my ink is running out on my printer, haha. Then using a pencil draw in some of the shadows that might be hard to see from printing, around the arms, and chin. Next cut off the ears and hat.

Step 3: Cake Time

Next use a cake that you prepared. You can use a store bought box cake like I used for this demonstration or any homemade cake really. I have several instructables for cakes from scratch here. After you bake your cake in a 10 inch round pan or 13x9 rectangle pan, let it cool completely before taking it out and setting it on your cake board. Then place your template on top of the cake and cut around it with a knife. Save the leftover cake bits, we will use these for the ears. Any leftovers you can eat or make cake pops with them. :)

Step 4: Trim That Tail

Next we want to trim down our tail because it is too fat right now. Cut half way down into the cake using the template as a guide. Then cut it horizontally to essentially make the tail half as thick.

Step 5: Cut Out the Ears

Next we will use our ear pieces and place them on some cake scraps and cut those out with a knife and place them on our cake board.

Step 6: Cover in Buttercream

Now if you need to you can level off the cake a bit with a knife. Next cover the whole cake with buttercream frosting. You can make your own or use store bought. I have an instructable on how to make a tasty buttercream here.

Step 7: Knead and Roll

Next take about half of the box of fondant (24 ounce box, 680g) or 12 ounces, 340g. And knead it in your hands until it gets very soft. Now roll it out with a rolling pin or fondant roller until it is about 1/8th of an inch thick and make sure it is much larger then the cake itself. Then you can roll the fondant back on to the rolling pin.

Step 8: Place and Shape

Now unroll the fondant onto the cake. Then using your hands shape the fondant all around the cake. Make sure your hands are clean!

Step 9: Trim Trim Trim

Next cut away the excess fondant with a knife or fondant rolling cutter. Our Pikachu is taking shape! :)

Step 10: Feet

Now we want to form our feet. The basic shape will already be there from the cake, but we want to define them better. Using your fondant tool gently start shaping the feet. After you are done you can use your knife to put in little slits to represent the toes.

Step 11: Chin and Arms

Now we want to fill in some more details. Use your fondant tool to shape down the chin area a little bit. Be careful, you don't want to tear the fondant. Next grab some yellow fondant and form the arms. Attach the arms where the shoulders would be, use your template as the guide. If you need to use a tiny bit of water to act as glue. Again, you can use your knife to make little slits representing the fingers.

Step 12: Ear Tips

Next our Pikachu needs the tips of his ears done. They tend to be black or dark brown, I am going to use black. Roll out the black fondant really thin and wrap the ear tips. Use water as necessary to glue it down. Shape around it with your fingers then cut any excess fondant away.

Step 13: Nose and Mouth

Next we will work on the nose and mouth. Place a dab of water where the nose will go, then form a little tiny triangle shape from the black fondant and place it where the nose should go. Then using a toothpick and a bit of water draw an outline where the mouth should go. Take a tiny piece of black fondant, roll it out and then place it for the mouth.

Step 14: Pupils

Now use your piping tip to make round pupils out of the black fondant. We are done with the black fondant and can put that away.

Step 15: Red Cheeks

Next take some red fondant and knead it a bit in your hands. Then roll it out really thin and using the bigger end of your piping tip cut out two cheek circles. Then place them on the cake, again using water if needed to get it to stick. Getting closer! :)

Step 16: Brown Fondant

If you didn't buy brown fondant, we need to make some with white fondant and a bit of brown icing color. Take a toothpick and dip it into the icing color and then put it onto the white fondant. Then knead in the color, repeat until you get the desired brown, or for course you can skip this step if you bought brown fondant.

Step 17: Finish Off the Eyes

Now roll out a small piece of brown fondant and then using the same piping tip you used for the cheeks, cut out two brown eyes. Then place them on the cake. Next place your black pupils. Then place two small white specs for the eyeball highlight. We are almost there! :)

Step 18: Detective Hat

We just need to make his hat now. To do this take a good chunk of brown fondant and then form and shape it into a little hat. Place it on top of his head. Next to finish off the had add a little round piece of brown fondant on top of it. We are finally finished. A cute little Detective Pikachu Cake. :) Enjoy! :)
