Introduction: Make Cutlery for a Leatherman
In this Instructable I'm going to show how to make cutlery for a leatherman surge.
Step 1: What You Will Need
You will need:
- stainless steel cutlery (I recommend old cutlery because new cutlery is way to expensive)
- sandpaper (dont know what grit but its one fine grit and one rough grit)
- grinding wheel
- work gloves
- safety goggles
- paper
- fineliner
- glue
- Scissors
- handsaw (for metal)
- waterproof marker
for your own safety
were the work gloves and safety goggles
while working with a grinding wheel
Step 2: Copy and Cut
-First copy the shape from the end of the saw or file.
-than cut it out (cut it out as precise as possible because
it will make work easier later on)
Step 3: Mark and Paste
- get your cultery and mark where you want to cut them.
- than glue your copy on behind your line
Step 4: Cut and Grind
- now cut your cutlery to size
- after the cutting you have to grind off the big pieces
- cool your project ones in a while so you don't burn your fingers
Step 5: More Grinding
For this part you have to use the finer side of the grindingwheel.
Try to follow the outline of your copy exactly.
When you are done with grinding the outline you try to fit it in your leatherman.
Keep grinding small bits off until your cutlery fits in nicely.
Step 6: Sanding and More Sanding
In this step its all about the detail, because were going to sand most of the scratches away.
You can use all sorts of grits. Start with a low grit for the deep scratches and then
work your way up to higher grits to get a nice smooth finish.
tip
when using
high grits it's
advised to make
your project wet.
Step 7: Before Use
wash your cutlery before using it so that you won't get all the dirt from the grinding and sanding in your mouth.

There is no such thing as too many flashlights, too much duct tape, and too many leatherman's.

How can you tell if a leatherman has the ability to attach to utensils such as this? I plan to buy one soon and I'd like to be able to make my own, such as these

never mid, I found it. The ones thaat can change blades are listed as having a "blade exchanger"
so far the only one I can find that is made by Leatherman with this blade exchanger is the Surge:

Having the Leatherman Wave, I have the Large bit driver that would be good as well to hold the fork and spoon.

That's not a bad idea. Wave ftw.

I think this is a great idea. Can you close the leatherman with the utensil attached?

I doubt it since the utensil is so big, but it definitely decreases the overall size of everything, you could probably fit a leatherman and a few utensils in one carrying case (that wont end up being as long as a standard fork)

This is definitely a great idea. One of the few I will probably really end up doing myself. Might even be cool enough to justify a second Leatherman that accepts the jigsaw blades... or just act as a knife to complement the fork.

The higher the number, the finer the grit. Smaller numbers are good for initial smoothing of a surface. Higher numbers, used in sequence, lower to higher, can help you make scratches dissappear, so you can get wood which looks almost like cast plastic, or wood simulated glass.

cool! but there is a major problem with this, the problem comes when got to use a fork AND a knife at the same time, like when you eat meat.

How can you live with only one Leatherman tool? :-)
Reply 13 years ago on Introduction
better that if you have multiples

very nice, this caught my eye with your title but unfortunately I've got a smaller juice S2 which doesn't have the ability to attach other utensils. none the less i still think this is a great idea.
