how did you determine what the z offset should be?
So, one thing that has bugged me in the 5 years since I made this, the Tachometer seems to be roughly twice the actual speed it's turning. I have no idea how to fix this. Btw, I actually use this for a lot of other stuff now... I hardly ever wind pickups anymore, but just having something that gives me more control, reversible direction, a tach, and a turn counter... super freaking useful.
Perlite is both a really good insulator, and doesn't expand much with heat or liquid. Vermiculite, however, expands and contracts a lot and that will lead to cracking. https://www.backyardmetalcasting.com/refractories.html
I can't find anywhere to get a good adapter, and the kapton tape came off when I was working on my computer and it's a PITA to get to stay, so I'm thinking about cutting the pin, or painting over it with a non conductive paint
