In knife making or bladesmithing, stock removal refers to the process of cutting the whole knife out of a bar, without forging to shape. It's just the terminology used when differentiating from forging to shape, it doesn't mean there is no grinding or filing. :)
This is actually a very old myth, in reality the direction in relation to the Earth's poles has no effect on the quench. Crossforge is correct about the window of time, but I believe its much shorter than a minute and depends on the size of the knife.

Glad you liked it! Consider looking for a local maker-space (if you haven't already), they can be great for apartment life!
View Instructable »Thanks for reading! It's actually not a whole lot of time when it's spent taking care to get geometry correct and working up through the grits. If it were spent hogging away material at a low grit then sure. After hot working it was within approximately 1/16th of an inch in all dimensions save for the curved tip, which was left long so I'd have enough to work with.

That's super cool! It would be cool to embed some LEDs in one of the bottom layers.

Yup, agreed, that's exactly what I did and it's the safest way.

Yup it is throughout the blade, though it will be slightly different on each side because of the distortion of layers during the forging process. If you reallyy want to know for sure about your piece, you could always polish off the sides and re-etch it, though you would definitely risk damaging it.

Hello! Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately this is incorrect. There were chisels used in the coal industry, but this is a different tool and in fact called a cold chisel. Hot chisels do exist, and are used when working with steel at forging temperatures. Both cold chisels and hot chisels have been around for a very long time, and cold chisels are used for all sorts of things in metalworking.
