  • Ultimaker Original Heat Bed Upgrade

    our heated bed had the thermistor already soldered to the heated bed surface. If you got one of the heated beds with a separate thermistor (which it sounds like you may have), you just need to tape it on. From my experience, these type of heated beds have a hole somewhere near the middle of the bed where the thermistor is meant to go, and the cable is routed out under the bed. I recommend using kapton tape or some kind of heat resistant tape to hold it in place. Id also suggest using cardboard or cork under the heated bed to also help hold the thermistor in place, and also insulate the bed a bit too. hope this helps

    nice one, looks great, much more organised than mine. the transistor will almost definitely get hot, its going to have a lot of current going through it. most transistors should be rated to handle 100 degrees, but personally i don't like to run them that hot if i can avoid it. Did you use the same type of transistor as me, or a different one? Is the 100 degrees before or after you put the heat sink on? If its still really hot with the heat sink, the transistor might not have enough voltage at the gate, you could try swap out the resistors to get maybe 8-12 volts at the gate and that may fix the problem.

    glad to see your interested in arduino, and I'm sorry to here your having issues with this project. If you want to make this robot you have the choice of using the code available on this GitHub page that we wrote: https://github.com/Chris-j-hill/sumo_test, or else you can use the adafruit motor shield library available here:https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-motor-shield/library-install. Our code is based off the adafruit code at the second link. If your starting arduino I would recommend the second link because there's more info online to use it. If you want to continue with our code there is a common thing you can check if you get a compilation error. If you download direct from GitHub you need to make sure to put all the files into one file named sumo_test. most likely they came in ...

If you download direct from GitHub you need to make sure to put all the files into one file named sumo_test. most likely they came in a file called sumo_twst-master (this is something GitHub does, not sure why).If their not all in the same folder called specifically sumo_test, arduino won't be able to access the code in the other files, and thus you'll get an error. If this is structured correct when you open sumo_test.ino in arduino several file tab will open within arduino. You do not need to install a library, this code is not structured that way at the moment. If that doesn't fix your issue, can you send me the error your getting because it could be anything but what I described is an issue we found a few people have before. Hope this helps

    We actually are just driving the motors direct, and it surprisingly does work but there's not much torque out of them. Hindsight is 20 20 though and if we were doing it again we'd definitely want to look into that aspect more. We may yet design some gear system for them, but that's a project for another day

    Hey, glad you liked it. It shouldn't be an issue if you want to upgrade to a more powerful design. In your case a lipo is definitely the way to go. You'll primarily also need a more powerful motor driver, we have a couple of these that we we'd normally use (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10182). They're kind of expensive but you can get cheaper ones on eBay or Banggood. The Arduino should still work fine at that voltage, I believe it's rated limit voltage is a good bit more than that. The code we use is here which can be set up for that motor driver configuration and several others (https://github.com/Chris-j-hill/sumo_test)
