  • Historic Wooden Toothing Plane Restoration

When restoring or just sharpening a toothing plane iron NEVER flatten the back of the iron. This will simply take of the ridges which form the teeth after sharpening the bevel. This compromises the functionality of the plane iron A LOT. Its not necessary for the back to be flat, with this kind of plane, the approach is totaly different. When sharpening the bevel you will have to take the burr off the teeth by simply hammering the iron into tight endgrain of a hardwood block. We use a designated Ash block for this purpose. Do not flatten the back, these old planes are quite rare and there are folks out there who are looking for them and know actually how to tune them.
