Actually I was trying to compare with the prices in France, that seem a bit high though! I think using a Raspberry Pi could totally do the job for this project but a micro controller seems to be more appropriate (in my opinion!).
Can't wait to see the finished project too ;) I think you can build the MIDI input circuit for a few dollars since it is just made out of "classical' components (a few resistors and a diode), a DIN 5 female connector and an optocoupler (less than 2 dollars each). The most expensive part in the electronics remains the LEDs strip but you can find some for about 15 dollars, same for the Arduino!
