Nice job! This project would be great for a drill bit that has broken off. Instead of using a wooden dowel, you could use the shaft of a broken drill bit. Just grind it down to the appropriate length. It's tougher than wood, and you could just use an unbroken one to drill the hole in the other piece.
Another effective approach is to use Bondo to fill in the gap. Once it hardens, you can bring your blade up through it for your zero clearance opening. It's strong, too.
