Thanks for your suggestion! I looked into EDM hole drilling, that's fancy and seems to be suitable for making tiny holes in tiny beads. Any ideas on how to make the counterparts for such a tiny ball joint?
This is very cool! Good instructible! When I was young I learned the craft of making sand balls from my father. Sand balls are different from the mud balls described in this excellent instructible, as sand from the beach is used, which is without a clay component. Always fun, always draws attention. It is the challenge to make them bigger than your hands, but that takes a lot of strength :-) Sandballs do not get such a shiny gloss as the mud balls, though.Maybe someday I'll write an instructible about it.
Nice out of the box thinking!
Amazing idea and perfectly executed!
Voice-activation would add so much in meetings! I think someting along the lines of "Kit" from knight rider?
A fun project, nice idea! I added an additional gear for more strength, and, since I didn't have the exact same wheels which push the rods, I used a clamping mechanism with rubber bands.

Fiddled around a little, but this is not going to be easy and would require more parts... The second gear (B) is normally sliding over the axle, and the last gear (D) is fixed on the axle, which means that both will not be supported when switching axles. Don't know how to solve this at the moment. Anyone?
