    Lathe Drum Sander

    Great idea.I am currently building one using a cheap flea market lathe and $5 worth of aluminium tubing from the local scrappy but tomake the thickness adjustment easy and always parallel I am going to bemounting two small car screw jacks with the shafts joined together.Like another poster I would hate having to reset the lathe or sanderas needed and with the unit on wheels it will take up minimal floor space (orcan go outside when that is appropriate) so felt $10 for a very rusty old lathe with no tooling was a good investment. A quick repaint, electrical checkout and new switch and the lathe works very smoothly. My biggest expense will be the base for the whole setup.Unlike the person who suggested a single adjustment screw in the centre I realize that the thickness table can/will tw...

    Thanks for the link. I looked it up and think a mix of that project and yours is what I will make. The manual positioning & magnetic locking the vertical camera positioning sure beats the heck out of a stepper and counter-weights for simplicity and eliminates lots of experimenting on counterweight settings. Thank you true as we say in Papua New Guinea. My project must be a little bigger than a microwave as one of my first scans will be an item 250mm high and 350mm wide - but I will use a microwave motor for sure for the turntable drive

    Good day allI was recommending Irfanview PURELY for batch photo cropping in this project. My apologies for the confusion.For general graphics manipulation/editing/cropping/joining etc Irfanview is a magic solution - no glam but lots of power and blindingly simple controls. It is no Photoshop but for 90% of what I need it does it far faster and easier than PS

    A fantastic Instructable that deserves allthe praise it has earned.First a suggestion. If you can run Windows software on your Mac (by dual boot oremulation or other means) try Irfanview with its add-ons. Irfan Thumbnails can batch crop every photoin a folder simultaneously. The learningcurve is very low - it took me under two minutes to learn and I am in my mid70s.Secondly your project has given me an ideafor a purely photogrammetry scanner that I will try and develop. I am thinking of using your basic idea with aslightly bigger box.The camera andlighting would be mounted on a counter-weighted horseshoe shape pivoted eachside a little above the level of your rotating table.A second stepper motor can then move thecamera and lighting in a vertical plane so that the first set of photos ...

    This instructable is almost exactly what I want to do with my band saw but cannot because, being well past 70 my ability to learn Arduino is practically zero even though I am still capable of assembling and soldering the kit. Doubly so when guided by such a well written set of instructionsMy thought is to put six equally spaced reflectors on the bandsaw top wheel (I expect that at very low speeds a single reflector on a wheel doing only a few rpm when cutting metal would not get enough signals to be reliable) and I need to read out the blade speed in feet per minute and/or metres per second. I have butchered up a treadmill to provide a widely variable speed as no amount of pulleys and belts that I could come up with would bring the speed down to 80 feet per minute needed for some meta...

    Phils way will work but if you are in a hurry hole saw a bigger hole (10cm/4in) and slip the longest piece of 70x20/3x3/4 pine that will fit in behind the hole with a light skim of drywall mud on it and fasten with at least two drywall screws each side (I use 4 or 5 each side) - do not over tighten, you want the screw heads JUST below the surface so that they get the maximum support from the paper. The wood may be at a strange angle and need the ends cut at angles but length is strength.Pre-cut a 10cm/4in diameter plug and fit it to the hole while the drywall mud is still wet with two or three screws to ensure it sits flat. Firmly force the mud into the remaining slot and the centre hole then put a light skim over the top of the whole area. Using a damp sponge gently remove all the su...

Using a damp sponge gently remove all the surplus from around the screws and plug and then off the top of the screws and plug leaving the slightest amount of surplus so that you minimise your sanding and refilling.Let everything dry fully before sanding. Your shower curtain is now attached with screws, 30mm (1 1/4in) longer than your curtain fitting thickness, to the wood behind the drywall and that being well bonded to the drywall ensures it will not move.
