Could be just normal mild steel. Polished steel can be blued like that using a kiln at particular temperatures. The color starts at a yellow straw color then goes through blues and purple shades then finally a sort of gunmetal color.

I believe one of the reasons to use oil over water is that water will cool the metal a little to fast, and the metal will contract to fast causing cracking. Maybe its because the water evaporates pulling more heat out vs oil that does not?
View Instructable »What bothers me is the fact that a lot of files are now case hardened. They wear out fast and don't cut well, and the worst part is I can't make knives out of them lol.

Nice, Really useful for games like this. If you like war thunder, you should try DCS (digital combat simulator). Its an insanely detailed MMO fighter jet simulator. I have heard that its actually been used in training fighter pilots.

Cool build. I have been doing research about building one of these, but some of the info I need I haven't been able to get a clear answer on. All of these home built turbojets have some sort of oil system, but I have also seen some with a water cooling system, which i'm not sure is necessary. As far as I can tell, the oil if for the bearings, but not for the rest of the turbo. I don't really think a turbo is designed to take so much heat, so would some kind of cooling system be necessary? I also want to run off of liquid fuel, and i'm wondering about the implications of that, especially about how to vaporize the fuel.

Far as I know, you can weld almost any kind of metal in a forge like that, but it takes a lot of practice. Mokume Gane is a really interesting example of this.Thin layers of Copper and brass/nickle are laminated and forge welded to form a kind of copper Damascus. Really cool material when made right, but harder to do than welding steel, because there is less gradation the material color when it is hot. Harder to know when to weld, and when you are about to turn your piece into a puddle.
Really nice work! The final outcome looks great, and its even better since you used scrap material to make it. If you know what kind of metal to look for, there really isn't a reason to go buy a whole bunch of expensive carbon steel as I've found. About the forge, is it lined? Hard t tell from the photos, but a lot of forges you can buy online come with just the ceramic blanket with nothing to protect it from the flux, and nothing to protect your lungs from it.
View Instructable »These kind of axes are usually made with a tapering eye, which matches the top of the handle. The handle gradually grows larger towards the top, you slip the head up from the bottom, and the wider section at the top keeps it from slipping off. I would really like to make an ax like this, but I'm still working on the forge welding part. My congrats to you managing to do it!

I had a question regarding cooling for the Turbo. I can't find a definitive answer on whether or not water cooling is necessary, or just oil for the bearings. Also, as far as pumps for fuel, I was thinking I could pull old fuel pumps off of cars at a scrapyard. If I am able to use old fuel pumps for oil and fuel, it would be a lot cheaper than buying new pumps.

Wow, the finished product looks amazing! Always wanted to try this, but doing trial and error with nickle would be an expensive process for me. I didn't know I could use brass instead! Now i'm definitely going to have to try making some.

Another good resource is the book "Armor Never Wearies" by Timothy Dawson. It encompasses most of the methods and materials for most of the more western types of lamellar. Most importantly for me, it contains the lacing patterns for some of the more complicated armors that i'd like to build.

Looks amazing! would love to learn how to do weathering on pieces like that. If you like armor, and Especially Asian like armor, you should look into Lamellar armor. Its made of lots of little plates of steel laced together with cord, worn by the Mongols and Chinese. wonder how hard it would be to do in foam?

this is amazing! never knew microwave kilns existed. There are a lot of kilns that heat by current running through coils but they can be very dangerous especially if your trying to build your own. wonder if I could use a few large silicon carbide rings and a microwave to make a more cost effective forge... propane ain't cheap lol

yeah, most BBQ regs only go up to 7 psi, but i found a high pressure hose and reg that went up to 20psi, they are on the home depot site. Also had a hard time finding such a small bit like a #57, but you can also pick up a set of dremel micro bits from home depot, one of which is almost the exact size of a #57. burners work great! guessing my burners put out around 200k BTU

- Oldprophet commented on n1cod3mus's instructable Forge / Furnace Propane Jet Burner
just wanted to add that using that kind of hose could be dangerous, did you make sure that the hose ends that had been clamped were not leaking propane?an alternative would be brass nipples and a hose that had a thread on them. this could then be sealed with nylon tape to make a good seal. anyway, if your going to use the authors method just be sure to check for leaks.
View Instructable »the reason a brass or steel tube is used is because it is thick and the hole acts as a jet, copper tubing is kinda thin and has not worked well for my burner.
