This is a fantastic project... The concept of binary can be very intimidating.. This presents it with a very comfortable and familiar "clock face" like object that wont scare off the student before they've had a chance to try to understand. Bonus points for having it be a mechanical device that they can then look inside to see how it works!! My son is now in college, but if he was younger, I definitely would make this to help him learn! You should make an advanced version that goes up to 16, and have it labeled both in decimal and hex (ie: "10" is also labeled "a", etc..) so they can take the next step!!

Great idea.. tubes ordered!! Hard to tell from pictures, but I'm hoping it also may be good to store small 14 or 16 pin DIP logic chips too??
This is awesome, but I'm not clear on how you're getting power to the spinning portion of the project.. I dont see a slipring.. I see you have one wire hooked to the bearing, so I'm assuming you're using the bearing for one conductor, but then how are you getting ground from the base to the spinning part of the project?

That's what I was thinking... When I saw the picture, I didn't really care to make the puzzle, but I thought "Cool - He's going to show me how to make a quick and easy pressure chamber to shrink those balls!" :-)
