I think that many people would be interested in your version where the steppers are off except when needed. Perhaps you could click the "I Made It" button and share your design?

    I uploaded an SVG file of the cryptic characters and STL files of the rings. They are all in inches. Scale as needed if your working in millimeters. Remember that you can download the full assembly of the calendar in STEP format. From there you can modify the parts to your needs. I would suggest using Fusion 360. It is free to hobbyists.

    I uploaded a dxf of the spur gear (in inches) and a quick pdf drawing. I hopes this helps. The files are at the end of the Instructable under User Requests.

    The largest ring is 16.5" (419mm) O.D. Are you able to print something that large or are you going to add joints to the rings? Are you asking that the gears are incorporated into the rings and no longer separate segments?

    Are you requesting the ring gears be a continuous 360 degree ring (not gear segments) and in dxf format?

    I don't know what you mean by "original image". Please explain.

    I won't be producing any kits and this Instructable and it's references are the only "instructions". There are 3-D printer services out there. I believe some UPS Stores are now offering 3-D printing.

    GrahamRounce, thanks for the feedback! I incorrectly assumed that because this is a remix project, viewers would review the two original projects linked in the opening paragraph. I will keep your suggestion in mind should I produce new Instructables.

    Others have suggested adding a time feature. I hope that someone with more coding skills than I have (zero) comes up with great remix!

    The current time would be great addition. I just don't have any coding skills so I wouldn't know how to even begin.

    Your design is very cool. I like the chalkboard feature. Your hand drawn cryptic characters were created much faster than the ones that I did in CAD!

    Thanks cfb70. I was in the process of downsizing the tomatoskins calendar when I saw your Instructable. I quickly realized that the ideas should be combined. The finished calendar with your cryptic characters makes a great conversation piece!

    Thanks for the compliment but I don't have any plans to sell them. Of course, you can always build one! ;-)

    You're right; this project does require some special tools. Without them, you would not be able to produce the accuracy required. The good news is that there are services out there that can produce the parts that you can't. Thanks for checking out the project!

    I am working on a 75% scale version. I found a similar program called GearDXF http://www.forestmoon.com/Software/GearDXF/ that I used to make the smaller gears. I kept a similar diametral pitch to your original gears. I was concerned that just scaling the gears might make the teeth too small causing them to jump teeth during rotation. I'm trying to make a more complete 3-D printed enclosure to hide some of the red light from the stepper drivers that shines against the wall. I'll post a few pics when I'm done, but here is a CAD rendering of where the design is now. It's keeping me entertained!

    Thanks! I still want to do a hardwood version similar to yours only cut on my CNC router. I would like to try and scale it down to about 75% size. Your code works perfectly. I didn't realize that after assigning the desired date and time to the RTC by un-commenting one of the two lines of code that you provided, you should then comment out that same line and upload the code again. My calendar was reverting back to the original time and date assigned when power was removed and then re-applied but it's all good now! What did you use to develop the spur gear and ring gear profiles?

    Here is my version of the tomatoskins AutomatedPerpetual Calendar. I wanted to produce the ring supports as 3-Dprinted parts so I modeled the entire assembly and printed them off. I used the spur gears as provided and modified the female ends of the ringgear segments to work within the tolerances of my 3-D printer. Therest of the 3-D printed parts are of my design. I have the advantageof having a CNC router so I produced the rings and face plate out ofa sheet of 1/2” MDF. I just painted the front faces flat black andthen routed the graphics with a V-bit. I also routed some dowel pinholes in the excess ring material and mirror image dowel holes in thespoil board of the router. By flipping the sheet over andregistering it to the dowels I was able to accurately cut the ring profiles and…

In addition, I routed scribe marks on each ring thatcorrespond to the center of each Hall Effect Sensor at the Date=1,Month=January and Day=Sunday ring positions. Aligning the position ofthe ring gear magnets to the scribes ultimately resulted in thegraphics appearing correctly within the face plate windows. Knowingthat my weakness is getting the Arduino code to work, I decided tomake the connections to the Nano and RTC pins with pre-made DuPont style connectorsinstead of direct soldering. I was glad that I did in that I foundthat I had a bad RTC and needed to replace it. I also added somebarrier terminal blocks to distribute power and ground. Lastly, Ithought that I would make use of the calendar center area by adding afriction fit clock insert. I still need to do some wire management before hanging it on a wall. This was a fun project!

I used black acrylic for the top andbottom panel caps. I also slightly decreased the overall height ofthe panels to make the best use of the clear acrylic that I had. Inaddition, I created a 3-D printed slotted spacer plate that fitsunder each digit stack to stand off the PCB's without squeezing theLED's. Lastly I used a CNC router to cut pockets in the woodenenclosure to accept the panel stacks. This was a fun project withgreat results. Highly recommended.
