Not sure how you would use the handheld with it - I suppose its possible but you'd have to create something pretty unique to hold it steady, and then I'm not sure how you would plunge it further if needed. I'd stick with the router.

Personally, if you are trying to make a decision on a router, I would go with a plunge router - just more versatile and easier to manipulate for what you need. You likely would want the plunge for a router sled, and having that feature just makes other adjustments a lot easier in your workflow and accuracy. Dewalt sells a fixed base version that comes with a plunge attachment I believe for around $200 if you're looking for options.

It's subjective as I made them to fit my space. My suggestion is to measure your space and build dimensions and a cutting list based on your needs.

Even if you just built the extendable arm I think it would be hugely valuable. Cheers!
I'm glad it was as helpful as I hoped it would be. I think showing the conceptual and critical thinking for something as odd as this type of project shows you how to figure out the right solutions for your space since they are so unique to each person
thanks!
View Instructable »I considered doing that and might in the future but pre drilling and the long screws seems to be very secure for the purpose of this project. I am considering adding a hand wench to raise and lower the whole thing though!

That's funny and would have been a great idea and I guess keeping it that way does allow for it. So funny that I got this comment this weekend - I literally just restored this vice from my father in law this past week and it came out so good - a vice worthy of the bench!
