I have learned the hard way.. Don't use paper towels on your cast iron. It leaves little pieces that stick to the pan and are very hard to remove. Solution?? Gauze pads!! Wont leave "anything behind" and has a slight "abrasive" quality, that helps to remove food stuffs. Great for applying a layer of oil also to help in that "seasoning" process.

I have not tried this method because my coal stove does not produce the same kind of fine ash that a wood stove does...I might be able to use the fine coal ash that is left in the stove but it might be to "gritty"..
