if you power directly to the gpio pins then you bypass the safety fuse. I sometimes power the unit from the usb ports on my pc without issue, the zero doesn't use all that much power.

to be honest it was there already as I previously used the zero in another project before this one. Don't think it makes much difference tho.
Thought of that but then you're restricted to original playstation pads for all the games. Also the usb pads are very cheaply replaced when needed. I could have replaced the ports with USB ports too but I liked the idea of opening the lid and seeing inside. If you do one I'd love to see your pics!!

I used a Pi 2 but the Pi 3 is now available and it has built in wifi. it is the same size but will need a higher rated power supply.
