Where will the water go when it rains? That's what's always stopped me from doing this was, that it will fill full of water when it rains like a pool.

I made a custom board and it works GREAT!! Still need to make a 3d printed case for it...
Here is my finished custom PCB running your custom software..It works AWESOME!!https://youtu.be/zo8MzS_0F60
Got the USB data chip (FTDI) talking to the 328P MCU, and the MCU talking to the WS2812B LEDs. Test working so far, now to solder the rest of the LEDs to the board since I know it's all working together correctly. Then see if we can get it running in MinceCraft!! My 10yo Daughter is so stoked, she will solder on the rest of the LEDs tomorrow after school, and see if we can get this working...
Your Idea inspired me, I just made up this board for my kids to solder and assemble when it comes in using most all SMD parts!! The FTDI chip is the single most expensive part on there but hey, it's done for the love of building not money right?? Thanks for the idea, awesome work! The kids will LOVE IT!!!I will try and remember to post pics when ours is done and operating...
You could likely use the magnet on the Toner BEFORE you even add it to the oil to test if it will work or not...

Yep I read it all :) I didn't do any driveby commenting :)
2) Not really, I have and use 5mm ones all the time. I have many front panels that I use the 5mm in and they are lights for all sorts of indication (IE not used in a strip). There's way more than just the WS series too. You can easily use the APA101 which just adds a clock line so timing is not important really after that when using those. With so many Digital LEDs to choose from in every package size and shape imaginable, and almost any method of communication, using old analog methods seems old and so outdated to me... But to each their own :)Again great job, just wanted to ask why.....
Just wondering why you would not just use WS2812B LED's and control zillions of them with one data wire, and no shift registers..The WS2812B's have the shift registers built into EACH led as well as a driver.Good job for sure, just wondering why anyone would need this, when new tech is cheaper and better, and easier?

Just an FYI if you use the freezer in your house, this will RAISE your bill. There is no difference in leaving the door open on your freezer and this project.IF you get your ice from somewhere else for this project, then yes it's valid but using the freezer in your house is pointless. Your fridge does not "run 24/7" it comes on when there is too much heat inside itself, and turns off when the heat has been removed enough to the set point. It MOVES the heat from the freezer to inside your house. Plus it creates extra heat while doing so (Energy consumed while running, is turned into extra heat)

EXACTLY!! If you made the ice in your freezer in your house then this is the SAME as opening the freezer door in your house and saying you're "cooling your house" LOL...
