I found that pouring alcohol down the hole late at night and lighting it on fire worked very well. It appeared that the entire nest was wiped out. Not too bad for the environment either.
I also had a nest right next to my front door. Each time we would enter or exit, the yellow jackets would attack. With two very young kids and a wife allergic to wasp stings it was necessary to eliminate the nest. Not my preference but a necessity.
