Won't wax work? Very little sticks to it but the epoxy may break it down to the point that it isn't there any more.

Why couldn't you just build it on a nice strong trailer and move it wherever you want to camp, then you could take it already loaded with all your supplies? If being deep in the woods is the reason I totally understand but if you could take a 4 wheeler and pull it through the woods to the site you'd want to use.... then you could get it back out and make any desired modifications at home at your leisure.
Most keys are made of brass with a coating on the outside for looks, like a chrome type thing and will never rust anyway. The exception to this is skeleton keys and probably a couple others, but house keys are almost always brass in one form or another.
