free hand mostly, it is very controllable...the only time I used a jig was grinding a dagger. (14 inch double edged blade) for a friend who does medieval reenacting.I think the disks are not used more often because they are normally unidirectional.... Mine is broken, this makes it better.

Nice, I use a 12 inch disc sander for grinding knives. If you disconnect the start caps on the old Deltas they will start by hand either direction. This makes grinding both sides of the knife blank easy. But, I too have always wanted one of these.....It is now on my list

My tools are mostly for woodworking, but I have turned brass on my lathe. I can probably turn Bronze. Most nonferrous metals are not a problem..I will try your lost foam casting, but I will also try making a wooden mold plug and cast from that...I am still several months away from this part of the project. (Hull first, then rigging) I will try to send you pictures

I improvised the double boiler with a clean tin can in a pot of boiling water... The wax came out great and works better than any of the commercial ones I have tried. It holds well and is not greasy. The second is my mustache after it's first taming with this wax
