Buckskin is a synthetic tear resistant paper. It's what Levi uses in place of leather waist/length patches on the back of jeans as it takes print well, is washable, and has the look and feel of leather.

For the top center section you could also use translucent corplast (you could use this in place of the 1/8" door skins and skip the bedliner coating)
Super! I think I read on the Glowforge site recently that rubbing alcohol could remove the laser burn marks so you wouldn't need to sand and risk breaking a fragile part.
I might try it with a used trampoline for the deck instead of the OSB
