Consider teaching the kids how to build composting toilets. Ridiculous simple. Environmentally safe. Instructional.
Our wood stove has a masonry chimney installed on the OUTSIDE of the house and so, in really cold weather (when you most want the wood stove working) it is nearly impossible to get enough of a draw to pull the smoke up and out. In these instances I'll warm the air inside the flue / chimney using a blow dryer, and then start the fire. Works >90% of the time.
Nice. I will have to consider doing this after I move into my next house.
